Saudi Arabia to open a cable car in Makkah

The cable car will connect Masjid Al Haram to Cave Hira, making it more accessible.

Saudi Arabia has been making it easier for people from across the world to travel to the Kingdom. With new hotel openings, blockbuster events, and entertainment zones, the country is going through massive changes. Even from a religious point of view, Saudi Arabia is making the holy pilgrimage to Makkah more accessible for Muslims. In an effort to increase this convenience, a cable car leading up to the sacred Cave Hira has been announced.

Located in Makkah’s Jabal Al Noor region, Cave Hira will now be accessible by a cable car. The journey will cover a four-kilometre distance, rising roughly 600 metres above sea level, between the cave and Masjid Al Haram.

Currently, the cable car project is in its final stages and will be operational for use in 2025. In the meantime, a life-size model of Cave Hira will be installed to give visitors a closer look at what to expect.

Earlier, people who wanted to visit Cave Hira had to make a steep climb through the rocky terrain. In recent times, a paved walkway was built to make the climb easier. However, the upcoming cable car will elevate the experience, also allowing people of determination and the elderly to visit the sacred place.

Cave Hira holds significant importance for Muslims as it is where the first revelation of the Holy Quran came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) over 1,400 years ago.

The development of the cable car in Makkah is part of a larger project under the Hira Cultural District, which will span over 67,000 square metres. It will also include the opening of three new museums in 2025, which will be located in Jabal Omar.

Apart from the Hira Cultural District, the Mount Thor Cultural District is another project in the region that will be developed in parallel, making travel to Makkah more convenient and wholesome for pilgrims.
